The Upper Mustang trekking brings you into the hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom. It’s also called ‘Lo’. Lo was the king from the 15th century, and Lomanthang was the capital city of Mustang. Upper Mustang is located near the border of Tibet and the people from this region speak Tibetan language and practice traditional Tibetan culture. Tibetan Buddhism is still being practiced in a very pure form and the villages are built in Tibetan styles, a white painted houses with firewood tucked on the roofs. Teahouse trekking to Upper Mustang is possible now somehow, camping trek allows you free itinerary to explore all corners of the Mustang trek, as the tea houses are not available all around the trail to Lomanthang.
It’s not only the culture of Mustang, but the landscape that is very much similar to Tibet. Mustang lies in the rain shadow of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna, so this is one of the treks that can be done in monsoon season as well, when the wild gray arid Mustang landscape is relieved by welcome splashes of greenery. Walking in a complete desolate landscape, surrounded by the monumental rocks, naturally formed in the shape of castles, gives you the feel of visiting an ancient museum. In this barren landscape, each village with its farmed fields is like an oasis. The trek to Mustang follows the salt caravan route of the olden days, when the people of Mustang traded Tibetan salt for grain from the lowlands. The goal of the Upper Mustang trekking is explore olden Tibetan Buddhism, monasteries, observe the unique landscape which is similar to Tibet. And of course to visit the capital of Upper Mustang ‘Lo Mantang where the ceremonial monarchy was existed till 2008. Lo Mangtang is a medieval town, surrounded by a huge town wall. From the pass of Lo La (3950 m) above Lomanthang, you can see the town shimmering in the distance in the barren landscape. Entering Lo Manthang through the town gate, you enter a different world. It is just wonderful to wander through the narrow alleys. On all corners of the streets you can find small groups of women spinning wool and discussing the news of the day. At the end of the afternoon big herds of goats are being let through the city gate and through the narrow alleys, back to their sheds inside the town.
Upper Mustang trekking is restricted area hence special permit to be obtained by government registered trekking agency before entering into the Upper Mustangs boarder at Kagbeni. The special permit for Upper Mustang trekking is 500$ for 10 days and 10 days permit is mandatory for this trekking.50$ each additional day to remain in the restricted area. The upper Mustang restricted area starts and ends at Kagbeni which is 8 km north from Jomsom. Jomsom is administrative region for Mustang district.Mustang trekking is possible to do as a tea house trekking as there are numbers of lodges and small inns are run by locals. They provide twin sharing rooms with basic facilities of toilets and bathrooms. And during the trek you can have meal from local lodges so you dont need to organize large number of porters and team of Chef for your trekking logistics unless you want to try the classic styles of trekking which was very necessary before developing lodges and tea houses in Mustang trekking and other remote trekking routes.
Upper Mustang trekking can be started flying to Jomsom from Pokhara, and trek to Kagbeni and to Lomanthang. After exploring villages, monasteries, localsculture and lifestyle and ofcourse, enjoying the very beautiful landscape of Upper Mustang trekking you will trek down to Jomsom and fly back to Pokhara or you can take a jeep/ bus ride over the high cliffs on the newly opened track of Beni-Jomsom- Mustang road along the Kaligandaki valley. The ride in itself feels like an adventure. The bus ride, Jomsom to Beni and from Beni to Pokhara it might take 10/12 hrs ride. So the best option can be flying out both way from Jomsom tp Pokhara which saves time and comfort. Unless somebody wants to combine Ghorepani Poonhill scenic (3,210 M) trekking after Upper Mustang trek then there is no choice of riding a jeep/ bus to Tatopani from Jomsom.
